A conference for all who care about the True Gospel

graphic logo of conventionMany observers, some leaders and even official task forces acknowledge that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is a deeply divided denomination. There are divisions over particular matters like full communion agreements, sexuality and interpretation of the Bible. Though serious divisions, they are on the surface. Beneath them lies a much deeper division — the proclamation of a gospel other than the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

WordAlone’s 2008 fall theological conference will examine in depth the different gospel being proclaimed in the ELCA and other denominations and contrast it with the true Gospel. The different gospel sounds nice and is cloaked in biblical language — “God is love.” However, it denies the basic truth claims in the Bible and in the ecumenical creeds.

The corrosive impact of the different gospel on the ministry, mission and vitality of ELCA churches and members will be addressed in the conference. The potential for rupturing ecumenical relationships and relationships with other Lutheran churches in the world will also be addressed.

Keynote Presenters

Bishop C. FitzSimons Allison first presentation, “The Episcopal Church: the Canary in the Culture’s Coal Mine,” will be about the different gospel that has led to such tragic decline and division within The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. Pastor Scott Grorud's presentation, “Wresting the Wheel from God: Theological Roots of the Current Crisis in Christianity,” will be about the different gospel often heard within the ELCA. Bishop Allison will make a second presentation about something that has made Anglican and Lutheran theology susceptible to another gospel, “Free Will: the Human Pretension to Autonomy.”

Panel Discussion

Dr. Steven Paulson, professor of systematic theology at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., and Pr. Tim Swenson, who serves Highland Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church, Alexander, ND, and Wilmington Lutheran Church, Arnegard, ND, will join Bp. Allison and Pr. Grorud in a panel discussion of the conference topics on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Workshops

Participants can choose from a variety of workshops, including workshops with the keynote presenters on the main theme of the conference, others that pertain to WordAlone Network ministries, including Sola Publishing, and WordAlone's partners like ReClaim Resources and the Institute of Lutheran Theology.
