In the next few years, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will ask its members and churches to engage in a Bible reading initiative and a discussion of how Lutherans approach the Bible and interpret it. One of the ELCA's resources will be "Book of Faith: Lutherans Read the Bible." Pastor Gary Jepsen of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Puyallup, Wash., has written a new resource for people to use in the forthcoming ELCA initiative and discussion.
He wrote "A Layman's Guide to Scripture: How Luther Meant Lutherans to Read the Bible" specifically for laypersons. He presents in one short reading a clear and concise explanation of Martin Luther's understanding of how the Bible ought to be read.
Jepsen has written other resources (available at the marriage and family section on the education page of the WordAlone web site) that many have found helpful for understanding, and participating in, the ongoing discussions about the authority of God's Word.
