Apr 28 - 30, 2006 Rocky Mountain Synod Assembly

Bishop Allan Bjornberg was re-elected by receiving 313 of 452 votes on the third ballot to his third term.

Kevin Kanouse re-elected bishop on the first ballot with 252 of 285 votes.

Resolution#2 That the NT-NL Synod express appreciation for the thoughtful manner in which the ELCA Church Council has considered the matters raised by the Metropolitan New York Synod and that the NT-NL Synod endorse the conclusions of the ELCA Church Council regarding the resolution of the Metropolitan New York Synod - approved

Resolution #4 That the NT-NL Synod affirms the actions of the ELCA Churchwide Assemblies that welcome gay and lesbian people to full participation in the life of our congregations and that the NT-NL Synod encourage all its congregations to express hospitality and continue prayerful conversation on their full participation in our congregations - approved

Resolution #5 That the NT-NL Synod request that the Leadership Commission provide rostered leaders with information regarding available materials to assist and support them as they counsel with gay and lesbian persons and their families - approved

May 6 - 7, 2006 Northwestern Minnesota Synod Assembly

A Resolution regarding the action of the Metropolitan New York Synod October, 2005 (Response of the Church Council to the Request of the Metropolitan New York Synod,April 2, 2006). The synod council's recommendation, "Do not consider," was approved.

May 12 - 13, 2006 St. Paul Area Synod Assembly

Resolution – “Expressing Gratitude for the Care and Support of Gay and Lesbian Persons in our Synod” ...Adopted

Resolution – “Endorsing Restraint in the Administration of ELCA Policies Applicable to Gay and Lesbian Rostered Persons” ...Adopted as amended

…it is the guidance of this synod that in the administration of policies that impede the full service in ministry of partnered gay and lesbian persons, this synod shall be guided primarily by how the mission and pastoral needs of this synod and its congregation would best be served;

May 12 - 13, 2006 New Jersey Synod Assembly

Resolution endorsing restraint in the administration of ELCA policies applicable to gay and lesbian persons called to ministry passed 238-159

May 18 - 20, 2006 Northern Great Lakes Synod Assembly

Defeated a resolution to establish a synodical sexuality task force to guide the synod in discussing the forthcoming proposed ELCA social statement on sexuality.

May 19 - 20, 2006 Southwestern Texas Synod Assembly

Ray Tiemann, first elected in 2000, was re-elected bishop for another six years.

A resolution that called for removing the synod's name from the list of Reconciling in Christ congregations of Lutherans Concerned/North America was defeated: 177-yes — 270-no. The 1998 synod assembly had adopted a resolution of welcome to gay and lesbian persons, and the 2000 synod assembly had adopted a resolution for the synod to be included on the Lutherans Concerned/North America roster of welcoming synods as an ongoing statement of its welcome to gay and lesbian persons

The assembly adopted a resolution that the synod encourage its pastors and congregations to seek responsible and appropriate ways to carry out, in their local congregation’s setting, the actions of the 2005 ELCA Churchwide Assembly regarding ministry with gay and lesbian person and to participate in the ongoing ELCA study on sexuality through intentional and respectful dialogue and discussion.

Passed a memorial that the 2007 Churchwide Assembly direct the appropriate persons within the churchwide organization to work toward a full communion relationship with Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ

May 19 - 20, 2006 Northwestern Ohio Synod Assembly

Resolution 06-01 “On the Term ‘Father’ in Lutheran Worship”

Resolved that the NW OH Synod Assembly request that the Synod Council forward to the Executive Committee of the Church Council of the ELCA this resolution for proper referral to the worship and liturgical resources section of the Office of the Presiding Bishop.
Resolved that the ELCA and its publishing house, Augsburg Fortress, in the production of new resources, retain the classical Trinitarian name for God, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit whenever God’s name is invoked in explicitly Trinitarian terms
Resolved that the names for the Holy Trinity that contradict the doctrine of the Holy Trinity not be used in new worship resources
Resolved that a variety of names and images for God be used in new worship resources as long as these names are consistent with the Holy Scripture and do not contradict the Trinitarian and Christological dogmas of the church
Resolved that congregations of the Northwestern Ohio Synod be encouraged to give explicit and renewed attention to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity in their worship life, proclamation, teaching and mission

Steve Talmage was elected Bishop after he received 204 votes out of 329.

A resolution, which was non-binding, passed the assembly 182-156. It called for "openness" in the GC Synod to ordination of gays and lesbians in committed relationships.

Bishop Warren Freiheit was elected to a second term on the second nominating ballot.

Approved memorial on living together in unity, which means ELCA's standards and policies are to observed.

Margaret Payne was elected to her second 6-year term on the first ballot.

June 8 - 10, 2006 Metropolitan New York Synod Assembly

Rescinded Resolution C from special synod assembly last fall calling for restraint in the administration of ELCA policies applicable to gay and lesbian persons called to ministry.

A motion to recommend Craig Nessan's work as an example of Lutheran hermeneutics failed.

Passed a resolution that proposed a faithful reading of Confessional theology and that the synod enter into a long period of discussing the Confessions and write a recommendation for the sexuality statement.

Resolution on maintaining the 2005 CWA decision on human sexuality (adherence to Vision and Expectations) passed overwhelmingly

June 8 - 10, 2006 Metro Washington DC Synod Assembly

Approved a memorial to amend "Definitions and Guidelines for Discipline" and "Visions and Expectations" that asks the 2007 CWA to apply similar criteria to heterosexual and homosexual persons within the rostered ministries of the ELCA.

Approved resolution on pastoral care for gay and lesbian persons in our synod, an expression of thanks to those offering pastoral care and support to the gay and lesbian members of our synod.

Approved a resolution on service of partnered gay and lesbian persons in rostered ministry that calls for restraint in the administration of policies that preclude service of partnered gay and lesbian person in rostered ministry.

Withdrawn - A resolution regarding discipline, that advises the Bishop that lacking clear direction from the 2005 CWA, that the Bishop of this synod exercise discretion in administration discipline that might impede the service of rostered leaders partnered with a person of the same gender.

Ruled out of order - a resolution regarding candidacy with a request that in the candidacy process, qualified candidates in same-gendered, partnered relationships will not be hindered by being in a faithful relationship as attested to by the candidate.
